Meet Our Vets
Dr Gareth Dunkerley
Ponsonby Head Vet
  • BVSc

Dr Gareth is originally from Hawkes Bay and qualified from Massey University, Palmerston North in 1999. Gareth spent 7 years working in London in companion animal general and emergency practice before returning to Auckland to head the team at Ponsonby Veterinary Centre.

Gareth enjoys all aspects of small animal internal medicine and his involvement in emergency practice in London has given him a keen interest in this area of veterinary care. His other areas of interest are dentistry and imaging.

Gareth is a keen horseman. He spent many years pursuing his interest in eventing and hopes that one day he will find the time to jump back into the saddle. He also enjoys swimming, going to the gym and running.

Dr James is originally from the UK (England) and is qualified in veterinary medicine from University College Dublin after graduating from the University of Glasgow with a Bachelor Degree in Zoology and a Masters of Science in Animal Welfare and Law.  James started working in London in a vet practice that worked alongside the RSPCA and the Metropolitan Police dogs. James enjoys travelling, kayaking, off-road driving and camping in his free time, he can defiantly taste the difference between Coca-Cola and Pepsi and has a published dissertation on imaging chickens and Antarctica is the only continent he hasn’t been to... yet!

James' family home is made up of 1 briard, 1 mallinois, 2 Australian Kelpies, 1 Australian shepherd, 2 domestic short haired cats (22 years old!), 6 chickens, fish and reptiles.

Dr Kevin Dalton
Vet Surgeon
  • BVSc

Dr Kevin graduated vet school in 2015 at Massey University Palmerston North. He had always wanted to be a vet since his bunny rabbit imaginatively named Jumpers became ill when he was a kid. Kevin grew up in North Shore Devonport and that will always be home to him, his mum is Canadian and is dad is English.

When Kevin graduated, he moved to the tropics in Cairns QLD to enjoy the life of diving and hiking. He had been working with companion animals as well as the odd snake or lizards there for the last 4 years. But he soon started to miss the Pohutukawa trees and NZ summers, so he has since moved back home to be with friends and family and has joined the family of Ponsonby Vets as a Veterinary Surgeon.

Kevin is a D or E or possibly even Z class celebrity having recently starred on NZ’s Heartbreak Island. His favourite spot to be is in the middle of NZ summer on Tawharanui Beach attempting to surf or playing overly competitive ultimate Frisbee.

Dr Cecilia Barr
Herne Bay Vet

Cecilia is a 2014 graduate of Massey University and instead of returning home to the States, she fell in love with New Zealand and has made it her home. After graduation, Cecilia practiced in Wellington and just recently relocated to Auckland.

Her interest in veterinary medicine has been a lifelong daydream. Because she was so allergic to all animals, especially cats, her parents limited her interaction with anything that made her break out into hives. Her mother once told her when she was an adult she could play with as many cats as she wanted. And now she's made a career out of it.
